I studied pure mathematics at the University of Melbourne, and I now work independently on AI safety and governance.

I want to dedicate my career to this because of the argument in The Most Important Century. If we build AI powerful enough to reshape the long-term future this century, the people alive now could matter more than almost anyone who ever lives. There's an obvious hubris in taking that personally enough to act on it. Not acting seems worse.

What I work on

I started in mechanistic interpretability. I still think that work matters but I no longer think it's where I'm most useful. There are more people trying to do it than there are mentors to train them, and I expect much of it to be automated before long.

So I've moved toward evaluations and governance. I'm most interested in what middle powers like Australia can do when they have so little leverage over the companies building frontier models.

What I'm looking for

I'm looking for work in AI governance where a technical understanding of the models is useful. I'd most like to do that in Australia. I want to work on concrete questions that matter alongside people who take them seriously.

Otherwise

Most of the time I'm either playing with my cat Charli (obviously named after Charli XCX) or thinking about Kant. I don't think people realise how crazy it is that just by thinking, we can know real things about the world without ever looking outside our own minds.
